Welcome.

The Shimmer is beautiful.

There are a lot of things that may or may not have been expected upon your arrival here – the walls of concrete and steel, the others that were brought here with you, the others that weren't brought here with you but have been a constant source of information and instruction and blatant, brazen surveillance – but the fact remains that this world does not seem, inherently, to be an unkind one. Foreign in some ways, perhaps familiar in others; either way, it's a world teeming with life, and with people, and perhaps most jarringly it's a world with beauty, and nothing you've seen otherwise is quite as repulsively and grotesquely beautiful as the Shimmer.

It defies desription, really; the boundaries of it are barely visible during the day, just a thin iridescent sheen encompassing the trees and thick-growing vegetation of the mountains, sweeping ever-closer and closer still to the boundaries of the compound you've been living in but are greatly unlikely to have come to call home. It cascades heavily down the face of the mountain, nestling into the tops of trees before it swallows them whole, arcing up into the sky so far that it hurts your eyes to try to find the crest. It seems almost ravenous in its grace; whatever it touches, it seems to consume.

At night, it's a different matter; it glows and dances in defiance of the bright lights of the compound, glistening bright like the Northern lights - a bit too low to the ground, a bit too far south, a bit too warm this time of year, but the effect is breathtaking. All the colors of the borealis seem to blink lazily at you as they twist in and out of view, sparkling scattershot among the remnants of a town about two miles off that has long since gone dark with abandonment and disuse.

Your mission begins tomorrow.

Your mission begins tomorrow and maybe you're ready for it, maybe you aren't; maybe you're trying not to think about it too much. But the fact of the matter is that there's a rooftop observation deck, open-air and about five stories off the ground, and it's granting you an optimal view of the surroundings and the Shimmer and that darkened town not too far off, and there are no other buildings around for miles. The air is balmy and humid, a little too warm to be pleasant but lacking the roiling heat of the day, a light breeze rendering the entire thing an acceptable respite from the training grounds within the building itself. The only sound this high up and this close to the Shimmer are those made by the people who are here with you – some you know, some you don't. Some are more recent arrivals than others; some have been here for just as long as you. You've all had information taken down about you, the results of which have been provided to you on a small device you found in your room, so perhaps it feels as though you know these people already.

Either way, the night is young, the sun having dipped below the horizon less than half an hour ago, leaving you with perimeter lights that are too bright and the ever-present, watchful glow of the Shimmer; there are tables set up around the balcony for you to use, to eat or socialize or just...sit. You haven't been deprived by any means, but the food that's been provided out here for you tonight is noticeably better than usual; perhaps they know it's the last time you'll eat well for a while. Perhaps it's an apology. Perhaps it's nothing to look into too deeply.

Feel free to stay out here for as long as you like; enjoy each other's company. Or don't let yourself enjoy it too much; it's up to you.

However you choose to do it, perhaps it's best to make sure you have no regrets.

They did, because they're actually being smart about something in all of this.

[his opinion on the current establishment is. not high.]

I've got a handgun if I need it, but the chemicals will be nice.

[RIGHT??? IT'S LIKE A MIRACLE OF MODERN ENGINEERING, WHODA THUNK IT.]

Oh, it's no trouble at all, sir! To be honest, I was really distracted trying to learn all of this new technology myself--it's honestly amazing how far people have advanced here, but it's also enough to make one's head spin about in circles...

[she's. she's glad at least someone was here for the culture shock, let's put it at that, because good lord--]

Oh, absolutely. It's usually always best to stay close to your allies--going off alone is bound to get someone really hurt, after all. [KATAMARI FORMATION UNTIL WE DIE] I'm a little excited too, but I am kind of nervous...but if everyone's nervous, that won't be good for the group, will it?

I'm hoping to at least try to inspire a little bit of cheer, even if we are going somewhere dangerous. It'll help keep our spirits high once we're inside, I think!

...But I don't blame anyone for being afraid, either. They have every right to be.

[Hm, is it just her or did the air get a little frosty...?

Nah, that's just Felicia's imagination. Rideaux isn't a particularly warm person anyway, but the smile must mean everything's okay! So she's content to move on.]

That's something I've learned, yes! While magic is able to mend injuries quite well, it seems that the people here have managed to use technology to be able to treat deeper injuries--ones that magic may not be enough to fix, or might need a more careful touch, like you said!

It has been a lot to get used to, since we don't have...well, any of this technology, where I come from. [Even so, Felicia smiles.] But that is what has made it exciting, too! And it'll only serve us well, going in there.

[Though, she has to admit she's curious...]

The place where you come from...you must be familiar with the stuff that's in use here, but it sounds like you all use a combination of healing...artes, and technology. Is the technology here what you're used to, or has where you come from come up with anything more advanced?

[Felicia's nothing if not curious! ...And also incapable of shutting up.]

[Ah, praise!! Felicia brightens when Page says that, straightening up and placing a hand on her chest.]

Don't worry--I'll do everything I can to stay safe, and keep you all safe too! I'll do my best for you all!

[felicia you're very confident for a tiny ass woman with five shuriken to your name, oh dear gods

At the very least, Felicia is very determined when she says that much, and she is taking this seriously. She's just. Very much herself about it...]

So I've heard. [About magic and dragons being mere fantasy in other worlds.] But even in worlds without them, something that one might find in such a world presents itself: the Shimmer being a fantastic example.

[Granted...this would be an anomaly even by his world's standards. It's more in a sense that fantasy can easily become fact under the right circumstances.]

That aside, I believe that our recruiters made a wise choice in bringing in aid from other worlds. Our unique experiences should prove to be useful within the Shimmer.

[Ahhh, but that is where the truth lies sometimes: where you least expect it!

Okay no-]

Of course. You have chosen well. [He really didn't intend for that to come off as arrogant as it sounded.] I look forward to discovering the truths of the Shimmer.

[personal profile] abysstery 2020-07-20 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't been able to use magic at all since I arrived, so I believe it is a manner of assumption that the same applies within the Shimmer.

[This world has cool tech, but at the cost of having no magic. It's unfortunate. Imagine the possibilities of combining the two!

Anyway...]

You have my thanks. I am...unaccustomed to the vulnerability of not having a proper means of defending myself. [And Curran isn't here to back him up, so...] A normal staff can only get me so far.

It would not be my first run-in with such an ability. [Lovely.] ...Even so, prior experience does not make it any less disconcerting.

[So yeah. Definitely...something.]

One of many, yes. I am very eager to uncover the multitude of mysteries hiding within the Shimmer. Despite the return of one group, we are still more or less operating on a blank slate as to what is truly going on in there.

[Kimbley...

But that's fine, because he has some Qualms with them too, especially after the book with no context...]

Good. I like knowing that our combatants have had their weapon preferences taken into consideration.

[He's not a combatant in this, but he'd feel somewhat...inadequate without his magic. So knowing that the ones tasked with protecting the group are in their element is reassuring.]

I was given one as well. Should you require ammunition at any point, I will likely have a spare amount. I would like to keep its use to a minimum. [...] Not out of pacifism, but out of preservation.

Sounds more and more like a new frontier rather than abandoned civilization.

[He doesn't have all that much experience with either, but at the least he has a bit more context and a possibly better picture of what they're gallivanting into at this point. As for the snacks, he doesn't press the issue but does spend a moment or two nibbling thoughtfully between his personal smoke clouds.

Rifling through what he knows -- what they need to know or maybe just what he's curious about. That list is neverending so we'll go with:]

How long were they out there?

Well... there was this ancient witch, Tetelo, who had a grudge against my family. She lived for so long because she could possess the bodies of women who were part of her family line. It wasn't a complete possession; the women were still themselves for part of the time.

I, uh, knew the woman she possessed when I was on the case. Wonderful woman. Gave her life to ensure Tetelo wouldn't harm anyone else.

[What he doesn't mention is that said woman was the leader of a violent cartel, but when has Gabriel been a good judge of character...]

I've also seen my fair share of curses. Tetelo placed a pretty damn big curse on my family, hid away one of our heirlooms in her crypt that was hidden away by a particularly nasty one.

[His head tilts at the bow, but he doesn't remark on it -- now that she's got her supplies well in hand he lowers his hand as well, cigarette hanging by the wayside for now to facilitate conversation once he's in range.]

It's a good idea. You think we've got enough?

[He hasn't thought to ask for extra supplies, himself, but it's not like he has any field experience, nor the ability to carry that much extra in any event. Truly a noodle of limited uses, F everyone.]

I don't think you can train away clumsiness. [patient but blunt is apparently his M.O..... she gets a half-smile, maybe encouraging??] But you just have to learn to counter it some other way. Tie up your blanket. Work closer to the ground. There's ways.

You are enjoying this.

[I mean, Heinwald more or less stated something adjacent earlier, but Jean takes a moment to remark upon it anyway -- given the somewhat divided opinions on the subject, he'll take a moment to pay his respects. May Heinwald keep his enthusiasm...? Maybe.

There's totally crumbs, though. At least there's no cigarette smell. He doesn't need a plate when his original objective was walking by with food, shshhh.]

But that's the research division for you? [why is that a question] You have a guess yet?

[Well, the determination is appreciated, even if she winces inwardly at Felicia's spirited proclamations. There's a certain naiveté around her earnest declarations that concerns Page, but...well, for now, at least she seems keen enough to do her job.

That's all they can ask, really. So despite herself, Page offers a small smile.]

Likewise. Let's just see how we go, shall we?

Aww, you're so sweet Felicia! I'm so glad that we have someone like you to work with us for this important endeavor.

[Emma is also delighted that there seems to be at least one person here that's so friendly, it should hopefully make things easier for everyone to get along here!]

Ah. I guess it shows.

[That's probably a compliment of some kind?? Even if he has no idea what the Leviathan's Claw is; guild is a bit of an outdated term but not entirely unheard of. That's also a common feature here. He can almost kind of sort of relate to it, though. In a very superficial way, mind. Can't relate with the fact that the organization name is a mouthful, though.

ACCA is just way easier to say than most. But it's not ACCA he's thinking of.]

Too bad you couldn't bring anyone along.

Your perspective on life seems a little detached.
instrumentalized: (stress; smug; in control)

[personal profile] instrumentalized 2020-07-20 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Taking a self-defeating attitude about it is not going to help us any, regardless.

[ He'll brush through his fringe and let it run through his fingers a little, because playing with his hair in a prissy manner is half of what he does with his life and we're all going to have to look at it a lot now. ]

It's far too late to have second thoughts, so we might as well face our duty head-on.

[ Garma has a hard time seeing the Shimmer as magical, even when directly confronted with it. It's the result of a meteor impact, so it has to be radiation and physics and all kinds of things, rather than be supernatural. But he won't argue. ]

I would agree. We can cover a far broader ground this way than we could individually or with only scientists from this world.

I'm a soldier, rather than a scientist, but thanks to military development, I do bring a far degree of common knowledge about particles and the like.
abysstery: (☠ suspicious)

[personal profile] abysstery 2020-07-20 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[That doesn't negate the need for a plate!! Well, no matter. The crumbs are off, though Heinwald maintains a sour look over it.]

Don't sound so surprised, now. [Said sarcastically.] A guess about the origins of this book? I imagine it came from within the Shimmer. While it may be a coincidence that my name appears legibly within it, I will not throw out the possibility that someone associated with me ventured into the Shimmer.
abysstery: (☠ neutral)

[personal profile] abysstery 2020-07-20 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
All the better, then, considering the Shimmer's catalyst.

[Heavy knowledge of space and its particles is one thing Heinwald lacks, so he'll no doubt be checking in to hear Garma's thoughts on the matter from time to time.]
bornandbread: (the men who stare at cigs)

[Heinwald's sour look goes the way of the headtilt and the incredulous look and the-- you get the picture, there's probably a plate somewhere holding all of his consternation instead of the evening's vittles. Good job, team.]

Did I sound surprised?

[In fact he sounds more surprised to be called surprised than anything else.

There's a polite listening silence to the speculation and then a pause.]

I meant what's in the book. But if it was someone associated with you, you'd be able to read it, wouldn't you?
