Welcome.

The Shimmer is beautiful.

There are a lot of things that may or may not have been expected upon your arrival here – the walls of concrete and steel, the others that were brought here with you, the others that weren't brought here with you but have been a constant source of information and instruction and blatant, brazen surveillance – but the fact remains that this world does not seem, inherently, to be an unkind one. Foreign in some ways, perhaps familiar in others; either way, it's a world teeming with life, and with people, and perhaps most jarringly it's a world with beauty, and nothing you've seen otherwise is quite as repulsively and grotesquely beautiful as the Shimmer.

It defies desription, really; the boundaries of it are barely visible during the day, just a thin iridescent sheen encompassing the trees and thick-growing vegetation of the mountains, sweeping ever-closer and closer still to the boundaries of the compound you've been living in but are greatly unlikely to have come to call home. It cascades heavily down the face of the mountain, nestling into the tops of trees before it swallows them whole, arcing up into the sky so far that it hurts your eyes to try to find the crest. It seems almost ravenous in its grace; whatever it touches, it seems to consume.

At night, it's a different matter; it glows and dances in defiance of the bright lights of the compound, glistening bright like the Northern lights - a bit too low to the ground, a bit too far south, a bit too warm this time of year, but the effect is breathtaking. All the colors of the borealis seem to blink lazily at you as they twist in and out of view, sparkling scattershot among the remnants of a town about two miles off that has long since gone dark with abandonment and disuse.

Your mission begins tomorrow.

Your mission begins tomorrow and maybe you're ready for it, maybe you aren't; maybe you're trying not to think about it too much. But the fact of the matter is that there's a rooftop observation deck, open-air and about five stories off the ground, and it's granting you an optimal view of the surroundings and the Shimmer and that darkened town not too far off, and there are no other buildings around for miles. The air is balmy and humid, a little too warm to be pleasant but lacking the roiling heat of the day, a light breeze rendering the entire thing an acceptable respite from the training grounds within the building itself. The only sound this high up and this close to the Shimmer are those made by the people who are here with you – some you know, some you don't. Some are more recent arrivals than others; some have been here for just as long as you. You've all had information taken down about you, the results of which have been provided to you on a small device you found in your room, so perhaps it feels as though you know these people already.

Either way, the night is young, the sun having dipped below the horizon less than half an hour ago, leaving you with perimeter lights that are too bright and the ever-present, watchful glow of the Shimmer; there are tables set up around the balcony for you to use, to eat or socialize or just...sit. You haven't been deprived by any means, but the food that's been provided out here for you tonight is noticeably better than usual; perhaps they know it's the last time you'll eat well for a while. Perhaps it's an apology. Perhaps it's nothing to look into too deeply.

Feel free to stay out here for as long as you like; enjoy each other's company. Or don't let yourself enjoy it too much; it's up to you.

However you choose to do it, perhaps it's best to make sure you have no regrets.

[Page had listened quietly to the briefing, making the odd mental note here and there. Vitali's straight-forwardness had been appreciated; Page had never been one for pointless platitudes - desperate pleading with traitorous monarchs aside - so her clipped delivery is good. Just information.

Said information about the people trapped in the Shimmer, however, seems...sparse and makes Page suspicious, so as soon as Vitali is settled away from the group, she approaches.]

I'd like to ask you something about potential survivors. How do you want us to act if they will not come willingly?

[There's...more she wants to ask, about those people, but this will do for now.]

Speaking of talents. Mind if I ask exactly what it is that crest scholars do? I'm curious.

[He takes a moment then. Seems to study the guy a bit. Considers.]

No. But that's because I think that's not all it is.

[He shrugs.]

I could buy you being the world-saving sort, though. Sure.

[Page wasn't...actually approaching, more passing by, but books are her weakness and she can't say she's too disappointed to have one thrust at her, nonsensical language or not. It had been quite a while since she'd allowed herself to read anything for pleasure, so once she's holding the thing she'll actually give it a decent once-over.]

...I'm sorry. I don't recognise this language at all.

[It's fruitless; like the others before her, nothing makes sense other than Heinwald's name. At least she can point that out.]

You're Heinwald, aren't you? So you're saying your name is in these notes, but you can't understand them yourself?

Evacuation protocols? It's been a while for you all, hasn't it, so they're well-organized...

[He's probably impressed, though his tone is about as business-like -- business he can do, and in fact there's something distinctly familiar about a back-and-forth like this. The food is a little more mundane and a little stranger, the smell of cigarette smoke on the air makes the evening a little more comfortable even if the Shimmer in the distance doesn't. It's a different sort of dinner this time.

He takes a moment or two more to think it over.]

That's a challenge, without communication. Any news from the abandoned towns?

[They did have that group that came back presumably with information, and all of them are certainly curious about the ins and outs of that, but how can it help them...]

[Huh.]

You are telling me that you learned nothing of note from from the sole group that managed to exit the Shimmer? I believe that warrants at least some explanation.

[ Let it be said that Garma Zabi believes in the best in people. Put it on record. And then make it his obituary. ]

We do have a rather large variety of career researchers or soldiers, you will have to admit.

If I had any second thoughts, I'd just leave.

[Wow, rude.]

You didn't have to come here.

[Or rather, he can't see why someone like you would come here, to what's essentially a funerary sendoff, somewhere she doesn't seem to want to be. Someone who doesn't seem to have time for the little people, for concern, for answering questions she could easily foist off onto some subordinate or other.

He's not used to bureaucrats being straightforward. Not without having some sort of vested interest beyond themselves. There has to be something else here, he thinks.

Maybe that's just his old biases working against him, though. Maybe, for once, this person is someone he can trust to tell them how it is.

He's not sure whether he wants that to be true or not.]

[Listen....bombs are good. Sometimes the only way to solve a problem is to hurl a damn bomb at it. She can respect that.

So, needless to say, Yeager definitely has Page's attention now. Particularly when the rifles are mentioned; she almost smiles.]

They're incredible, aren't they? I'm used to muskets that can fire off one round maybe...every three to five seconds, at the most? If you're quick on the reload. But the rifle I've been given can spray a whole magazine's worth in less than three. [She has spent...a lot of time at the practice range, if it isn't obvious.] If I'd had it at home I'd have far less trouble.

[Nnnnnnot that she has any intention of mentioning said trouble, whoops! Let's focus on the weapons.]

What exactly did you get, then?

[personal profile] planetary_bonds 2020-07-19 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
You're not wrong.

[To the first part or the second part? Both? Both is good(?)]

I just...some things about this, makes me think of home.

[Maybe if he could actually feel useful, could save this place, then maybe he could actually pay off some of the seemingly immeasurable debt he owes his home.

Maybe.]

I can't deny that we are.

[ It seems negative when Heinwald phrases it this way, though, which is weird. Garma has never thought of it in terms of being reliant, of being captive to it in a way. It's progress and it's something mankind is very proud of. ]

It is technology that has allowed us to settle space, after all.

[see page you get him.]

That's certainly fair! While I can't say I would replace my own so easily, that's because it's custom made and it can swap between forms, like so!

[To answer that question, he takes a step back and presses a button on that briefcase he's always carrying around - it unfolds and restructures itself to form a rifle larger than he is tall. Don't question how it does that. The suitcase was smaller than a normal suitcase. Vesperia makes no sense.]

Unfortunately, it seems that it isn't functioning as it usually would... Normally it has six forms, but only four of them are accessible, and I haven't been able to get the other two to work.

[instead of giving yeager three items we let him have three forms of his weapon, that's probably fine.]

[She's not the only one skimping on the meals, though in Jean's case it's just that he's been munching primarily on anything carb-related or the odd sweet in between -- what do you mean dinner's meant to be something other than appetizers and dessert, and whatever drinks have been set out for their last night of revelry out here?

It's easy to be distracted now of all times when they've been assembled, though he doesn't seem to be bothering to go through his own kit just now.

Possibly he should be setting a better example as the oldest medic (in number only), but that's sure not happening. All that being said, it's both the girl's familiarity from training and her odd movements over her med kit that have caught his eye. Speaking of addressing her, though...]

... Missing something? Checking the luggage is a good idea. [he's still not doing it] I think we were all given the same kit...?

[That's definitely a trailing off area, miss do-you-have-a-name.]

[Hmm. Is Yeager becoming nervous about this? He'll keep that in mind.]

Likewise.

[That's in response to not doing well with being idle part. Once he was done playing catch-up on this world, he started getting antsy.

As for himself...]

I have, yes. Though our recruiters decided to throw me a curve ball at the last moment. [He'll go ahead and pass the notes he's been carrying with him over to Yeager so he doesn't have to ask.] This was with my supplies.

Fair enough.

[It's the answer Page expected from a halfway-decent commander, which Vitali seems to be, so she's not surprised to hear it. Defend if attacked, end their misery if they're beyond help.

...]

...what state do you think they will be in? Based on your experiences with this thing. I'd like to be prepared if I might have to shoot innocents.

[ Well, thanks to that cigarette smell, he doesn't even have to look over to know who's there to listen to his musings.

In any case, it's not a literal piece of paper, but it's not entirely metaphorical either, as nice as that would be. It's a very tangible cost, and one he isn't actually eager to discuss, even if he did instigate this topic.

He shrugs. ]

Depends on the phenomenon in question, but... something like that, usually.

Oh? Let me see.

[He glances through the notes, and while initially it looks like it's about as relaxed as everything else he does, he quickly takes a genuine interest in it as he flips through.]

Curious... I imagine you can't read it either. There doesn't seem to be anything I can get from this.

[Considering that he's fluent in at least two of his world's languages, that's a bit surprising.]

I suppose it could be a language unique to a world that neither of us can read, but...

[Why give it to Heinwald? He pauses when he gets back to the front cover and notices the name.]

My, how curious.

[Heinwald gives Jean an incredulous stare, unimpressed by the response he's gotten. That's not...quite what he was after... Well, he'll make a mental note of what Jean's just said, either way. Whether or not this is good for his opinion on Jean is, well...]

It is, yes. They were keen to leave out any context, of course, other than its similarity to one of the maps that was drawn by a member of the group that returned from the Shimmer.
