Survival
CONCLUSION
The upstairs, as Vitali had said, isn't ready for you guys yet; there's going to be a lot of weird hazmat sterilizing going on for a while in there. She'll assure you, however, that when you're allowed back into the building it'll be on the floor where you did your training - larger rooms and fully-stocked kitchens, access to weaponry and training rooms if you want them, and furthermore access to labs and other technology once they've got the place prepared.
For now, however, you're being brought somewhere that you may remember from before all of this started. There's the rooftop, and the observation deck up top, and while the air is still balmy and humid it's with the rising heat of the day, not the cooling of it; the landscape is at once familiar and not - the mountain is scarred deep and blackened from the fires that accompanied the Shimmer's collapse, the trees and underbrush burnt to nearly nothing, but it will recover. That's the benefit of fire, it cleanses, makes way for new things to come alive. Perhaps most importantly, though, the boundary itself is gone, the grotesque beauty of the Shimmer having faded away to nothing, and the only light in the sky is the bright hues accompanying the rising dawn.
It's early, and a new day is starting.
There will be food provided for you this morning, decidedly better than anything you had access to in quarantine; there is also, for those of you who have been wanting it since day one, the general understanding that it's five o'clock somewhere and some rather nice alcohol has been set out for you. While none of you have to consume anything, if you want to you're more than welcome to.
(Maybe you'll be allowed a bar down there eventually. If you ask nicely.)
Those of you that choose to return home will be granted the possibility to do so later; Vitali will send someone to collect you, and then off you'll go. But until then, you'll be permitted to spend the morning with your friends; it'll likely be the last time you'll see them for a while.
If you're looking for Vitali and Hubert, you can find them on the floor down below rooftop-level, in one of the formerly-locked rooms partway down the hall; this one seems to be some kind of meeting room, with a thick plane of glass separating a portion of the room. There's a door on that other side that seems to lead into a surveillance room; you'll find one of them in that room at almost all times while the other is present to speak with you. The partition is necessary for now; it may not always be there, but for the time being it's how it's going to have to be.
Though it may take a while, eventually news will reach you that the members of the other surviving group have begun to awaken. The remnant of the Shimmer that you spoke to remains in the lower level of the building with them; he doesn't seem troubled by this, nor is he noncompliant with anything you ask of him.
The Shimmer is always with you.
What that means for you, from here on, is yours to decide.
