Evacuation.
MISSION START
It's taken a while, but for all intents and purposes, you seem to be back on track; the town you've been sent to investigate isn't far off now. Beyond a crest, just down one of the wooded hills; as you make your way, the strange wildlife watches you. Nothing much. Just one of those deer.
You get the feeling that something always seems to be watching you nowadays. This feeling isn't wrong.
The top of that hillcrest will reveal the town itself, sprawling out below in your line of sight; however, it will soon become obvious that there's something deeply wrong with it. What you're seeing and what you know of the town tell two completely different stories; it's up to you to decide which you believe.
But what your eyes are telling you is that the town is overgrown, the forest reclaiming it for its own – the streets are cracked and broken, grass and shoots of flowers poking up from the roads and the pavement; the ground is thick with fallen leaves, and the buildings seem to have a bright yellow moss growing over them in places. There are residences that seem oddly undisturbed, as though their occupants simply disappeared all at once; given that the town was allegedly evacuated, perhaps that stands to reason.
What doesn't is that this level of growth would take more than a week or two to develop. Maybe you'll find survivors. Maybe you won't. It's worth looking around, either way.
Perhaps it'll be worth your while, in the end.

Assuming Felicia still has her gloves on, she might have to move some of the moss aside to get to the guy's pockets; he does, however, have lootable pockets, and they will in fact yield keys!
...This will also yield something else that's strange about the body in the process.]
no subject
Ah--Jean, look, there's keys here!
[YAY, THIS WASN'T ALL FOR NOTHING, THE DROP WAS GREAT--Felicia will pass those to Jean. Get those safes!
...Also what else is strange about the body. What are we dealing with here, how unholy is it looking to be--]

[He feels a little bad about having her dig further into the body given the faces she's making and the faces they all want to make in general at this point, but at least it wasn't for nothing! And at least they saved a pair of gloves. Judging by the state of things, they're going to need them for further examinations...
It's fine. They're medics, even if this isn't a strictly medical examination. Honestly, this is probably better to start off. Sweet summer baby steps.
He'll be going to check out the safes with these keys, so hopefully the body doesn't suddenly decide to zombie itself at this point.
> apply keys to safes?]

One of the safes contains a downright unholy amount of ammo; another is where some more high-powered weapons are kept. Desert Eagles and heavy-grade shotguns. A couple of TEC-9s.
The last one contains containers of accelerant. The sort of thing that can be used to start a hell of a fire.
You have been rewarded for your shameless looting. If ethics mattered, this would be a bad object lesson.]

He literally can't even carry most of this?? Please help him. More notes for the combat division because uhhh muscle is definitely needed here. He'll probably grab some extra ammo but it's not much because see: the carrying weight problem. TFW your resident noodle finds all the heavy artillery.
... Also he probably isn't an expert on guns but these look heavy in several senses, yes.]
I guess the combat division will be happy. If you guys need ammunition or -- extra weapons, we can probably supply ourselves here, too.
[Looks at accelerant. Looks at lighter. Yeah, he doesn't need that much, he'll figure out what to do with most of it later. Maybe just one or two for himself...
Ethics are for situations without murderplants, tyvm. He is going to carefully lock up again after the others have grabbed anything they need for now, though, and pocket the keys. You just never know.
While Felicia bodytouches and Hanneman DNA-touches... did we check the display cases? Anything useful in there?]

Looks like you've found everything there is to find here; well done.]

[Felicia hopes, at the very least, but good job Jean!!]
no subject
Want to try moving some more of that moss to see why?]
no subject
Move more of this moss out of the way here because Felicia's made her bed and going to sleep in it, she supposes, so let's move that moss out of the way. Why exactly are the organs hard, here?]

You know. This may as well happen. Everything else has been weird as shit today, so you know what, sure. This is happening right now, and Felicia is trying not to groan or give into the desire to put her face directly into her hands. Entirely because that's unsanitary, but also.]
...It looks like this man's internal organs have crystallized. I'm...going to try to take a sample back with us...
[Let's just...do that...she's trying to sound not entirely done here, but dear gods Culture Shock 101 did not prepare her for this shit.]
no subject
You've found everything there is to find, otherwise; corpse adventures can be left alone now.]

[Plants also usually don't do whatever the moss is doing, nor several of the other things members of their group seem to insist they might do, so that's all Jean has to offer at the moment. Emma and the research division really are the best people to ask, huh...
He's sounding fairly baseline Jean by this point, but can anyone blame Felicia for being Done. Just wait till they regroup................]
Thanks for taking care of it.
[He felt like he should reiterate that!!]
no subject
[At the very least, this seems to be all that they have to deal with right now. She's sure they'll get some more concrete answers once they get out of here, but whether they're answers any of them are gonna like remains to be seen.
Still--Felicia perks a bit at the thanks, giving Jean a tired smile.]
...It's really no trouble at all; I'm glad to be of some help that isn't making a mess of things. It makes me feel useful.
[It's...tired, but no less appreciative. You're the real MVP, Jean.]
Come on; we should get going. The others are probably going to want to see everything that we've managed to find.

[But alas, they are inside this living nightmare of plant life and human not-so-life instead of where normal flora exist, and more than that they are inside this microcosm of it about to get hit with The Answers, yes. Presumably.
There's a brief smile back, easy despite everything going on. It's possible that his real superpower is just his composure.]
I'm sure you'll be useful throughout the assignment, with your experience. I'll look forward to working with you more.
[Team Medic can afford to rest on their laurels for a bit. There's a nod: it's time for them to be off. Stinks in here, anyway.]
