WEEK TWO

A new day dawns bright as you leave the town behind you; the map you've found is simple, easy to follow, and perhaps most importantly it's the only lead you have.

And besides, it takes you closer to the source of the Shimmer's influence; that alone may make it worthwhile.

The through the woods leading up the mountain is one that seems to have been taken before, though it's difficult to tell how long ago; the long grass seems to have been tamed in some ways, tamped down and trod upon, and the presence of odd flowers remains constant. They seem to obey no season, growing out among the grass and the trees high overhead.

Though it's worth noting that you don't seem to be alone here; occasionally there's a silence that sweeps over the area, the sort of dead quiet that accompanied your initial approach to the Shimmer. The sort of silence that implies a predator in the area.

Checking will reveal exactly that.

It seems as though something has been stalking you - cougars from the woods have come down toward the group, and while they keep their distance for now, that may not hold true for the rest of the week...

You hear things in the night.

It sounds like humans screaming.

SUNDAY | MONDAY | TUESDAY | WEDNESDAY | THURSDAY

[OOC: Welcome to the second week of The Shimmer! Unlike the deer and the other wildlife you've seen so far, the cougars that are tracking you are hostile - you are free to interact with them in any way you see fit, but they will react as a cougar would and they are entirely willing to try to attack the group. While we will not be NPCing these encounters, you are welcome to do as you like with regards to their presence, including fighting them off.]

I hate leapin' to the magical option immediately.

[Says the man who spent two months as a werewolf.]

But I'm startin' to think that our writings were manipulated just like the plants. All scrambled up randomly.

I prefer to avoid it as well. Usually there's some much more reasonable explanation.

[Usually.]

Unfortunately, the Shimmer is very different from anything I've seen, so making assumptions won't do us any good.
notjustawriter: (♛ will be your own)

[personal profile] notjustawriter 2020-07-30 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe there really isn't an explanation.

But I've always found something. Curses are incredibly powerful, can last hundreds of years, and I don't know enough about them.
scythegun: (DECISION ⇝ you're totally fucked)

[personal profile] scythegun 2020-07-30 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That's assuming this plays by the same rules, ja? For all we know, we won't find anything useful at all.

[He doesn't actually believe that, but it's certainly a possibility.]

[personal profile] notjustawriter 2020-07-30 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm no expert on curses or anything, I just know they're varied.

My, uh, family was cursed up until recently.

Though I think the Shimmer is a little more... sentient.
scythegun: (SHRUG 2 ⇝ the shruggening)

[personal profile] scythegun 2020-07-30 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It does seem to be, though that's if we assume that the townspeople were right in hearing "God"... and that "God" is the Shimmer.

[...]

All this talking in circles doesn't seem to be getting us anywhere. Hopefully we'll figure some things out soon enough!

[But anyway!!]

What sort of curse was your family under, by the way?
notjustawriter: (♟ 'cause there ain't no one)

[personal profile] notjustawriter 2020-07-31 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
It's... a bit of a long story.

The short of it was that first borns tended to be plagued with nightmares and died young. A witch had an axe to grind.

[Also one time his horoscope told him he was going to die. That was a thing?]

scythegun: (REALIZE ⇝ estelle's the princess?)

[personal profile] scythegun 2020-07-31 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Are you the first-born, then?

[It's a bit less rude than asking "did you have an older sibling who died" but like. Not by much. Thanks, Yeager.]

You were able to rid your family of the curse, ja?
notjustawriter: (♟ i let the horse run free)

[personal profile] notjustawriter 2020-07-31 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
[His brow raises at that, but you know what. Yeager is still better than a lot of the people he met in the past year so he'll let the rudeness go.]

Only child. My parents died when I was young; I was mostly raised by my Gran.

[Completely coincidentally his grandfather also died young.]

I was able to break the curse, yes.
scythegun: (REALIZE ⇝ estelle's the princess?)

[personal profile] scythegun 2020-07-31 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Nodding!! He at least keeps any more rude comments to himself (this time).]

How did you end up breaking the curse? Were you able to find the witch responsible?
notjustawriter: (♟ after three days in the desert fun)

[personal profile] notjustawriter 2020-07-31 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
I did.

She'd been extending her life for centuries by possessing the bodies of her female descendants.
scythegun: (OKAY ⇝ "regaey" is yeager backwards)

[personal profile] scythegun 2020-07-31 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
...Well that's not horrifying or creepy at all.

[Hmm. Bad!!]

Did you kill her?
notjustawriter: (♟ made me sad to think it was dead)

[personal profile] notjustawriter 2020-08-01 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
No.

Malia ended her own life to save me.

[...yeah. He's still bothered by it.]
scythegun: (... ⇝)

[personal profile] scythegun 2020-08-01 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh.

[Well, that's morbid in a way he wasn't expecting.]

My apologies, I'm sure that must have been exceptionally difficult.

[He does seem genuinely apologetic, at least??]
notjustawriter: (♟ i've been through the desert)

[personal profile] notjustawriter 2020-08-02 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
She was a strong woman. Able to fight back.

[...Yeah. He still misses her.]
