WEEK TWO

A new day dawns bright as you leave the town behind you; the map you've found is simple, easy to follow, and perhaps most importantly it's the only lead you have.

And besides, it takes you closer to the source of the Shimmer's influence; that alone may make it worthwhile.

The through the woods leading up the mountain is one that seems to have been taken before, though it's difficult to tell how long ago; the long grass seems to have been tamed in some ways, tamped down and trod upon, and the presence of odd flowers remains constant. They seem to obey no season, growing out among the grass and the trees high overhead.

Though it's worth noting that you don't seem to be alone here; occasionally there's a silence that sweeps over the area, the sort of dead quiet that accompanied your initial approach to the Shimmer. The sort of silence that implies a predator in the area.

Checking will reveal exactly that.

It seems as though something has been stalking you - cougars from the woods have come down toward the group, and while they keep their distance for now, that may not hold true for the rest of the week...

You hear things in the night.

It sounds like humans screaming.

SUNDAY | MONDAY | TUESDAY | WEDNESDAY | THURSDAY

[OOC: Welcome to the second week of The Shimmer! Unlike the deer and the other wildlife you've seen so far, the cougars that are tracking you are hostile - you are free to interact with them in any way you see fit, but they will react as a cougar would and they are entirely willing to try to attack the group. While we will not be NPCing these encounters, you are welcome to do as you like with regards to their presence, including fighting them off.]

[ A tilt of his head. ]

Please don't stop on my account, I'm used to watching silently in the background. Perhaps a change of topic would be more inviting to this particular audience.

Oh, you might be right about that! Let's see, what to talk about instead...

[Emma hums a bit, arms folding across her chest in consideration before she speaks.]

So what do you think we'll find next in this place? I'm curious to hear your thoughts on it.

[... This question is possibly being directed at both Hugh and her uh sculpture friend here.]

[ He waits for the other member of their group to respond, but as the silence seeps outward- ]

Haha, well, I can offer my insight. But you may consider my answer unfair in some ways, for my answer is a simple: I don't know. That's the novelty in it, though there are some assumptions I can make—more flora and wildlife, which adhere to the rules of this place but not many of our own.

It is perhaps unfair, but it is also a reasonable guess to make given what we've experienced so far. It does make things more exciting if something unexpected does happen, though!

Unexpected...like suddenly coming across a vast desert? Or encountering a crew of pirates?
skelkro: (only fun for a few hours)

[personal profile] skelkro 2020-08-04 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
... Yes, that would be considered unexpected, given how we've only seen forest terrain so far!

[But she seems terribly amused by the suggestion regardless, even if it was perhaps a little silly.]

You never know.

[ A beat and a wink. ]

But the time I joined a crew of pirates was a bit messy, so I would prefer something else.
skelkro: (but that's okay)

[personal profile] skelkro 2020-08-06 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, but that sounds like it could have been a fun adventure... I don't suppose you would mind telling us the story behind that, would you?

[It beats talking about screaming cougars, that's for sure.]

Messy and fun, yes. [ He stands corrected but looks thankful for it. ]

I wouldn't mind, but in return would you tell me a story of your own?
skelkro: (if you're not being broken by a man)

[personal profile] skelkro 2020-08-06 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, sure! Though... I'm not sure what I could tell that will be as exciting as pirates. I'm not a very interesting person by comparison to that.

Nuance can be just as intriguing.

[ So he's here for all of that! But regardless, because this is a canon tale that's literally a sentence long he tells her about the time he found himself in a vast desert that had somehow ran aground of a ship. The ship naturally contained pirates, and so he did as a pirate should do; some pirate vernacular slips into his speech here and it's rather good actually? In the end, they found a cave that contained a magic lamp and with that they wished to be free of their sandy prison.

And so ends that tale, he never saw the pirates again. ]
