Descent.
CHAMBERS.
You've been down here for such a long time.
It's difficult to tell, perhaps, exactly how long it's been; the lack of need to sleep or eat has become more and more prevalent as time goes by, and it's made it difficult to keep to any sort of schedule - and while the darkness remains unyielding and unchanging, the same can't be said for yourself, now, can it? The further you go, the more it feels like maybe you could belong here; the longer you're within this place, the less it seems to want to let go of you.
It begs the question, really: Is it the mine that's making you feel that way, or is it the Shimmer itself?
Something is different today.
There's a sudden feeling that you've found a chamber, that the shaft you've been wandering down has opened up in a way that's more noticeable than the occasional offshoot leading to an eventual dead end - this feels massive, open in a way that clears the air and spreads out far enough in front of you that it's difficult to tell how far out it actually goes. There are a few promising signs here, however, even if you can't see them very well - the sudden clearing of the air's stagnation is one, but the sound of running water trickling through here somewhere is also promising.
There's also a feeling that should be familiar by now; namely, it's the general sensation that you aren't alone, wherever you are.
You've found something, but perhaps more importantly, you get the feeling that you're coming far closer to your goal than you were on the outside; don't get too excited, though, as you still want to be careful - after all, this chamber opens downward as well as outward.
You can get down to the lower level if you pick your way down; it shouldn't be too challenging, and you'll probably have an easier time seeing once you're down there. Just don't fall.

It's fine. Cold, but fine.
[Will anything stand out to her, that would make her not want to get out onto the opposite bank? Otherwise, she'll...keep on moving, until she's there. The sooner they can get the researchers to the Weird Tree, the better.]

no subject
....yes, let's. One more look at that tree before she gives the go-ahead for the others to join her. Any obvious threats, or can we summon the non-combatants?]
no subject
It looks for all the world like a human eye.]
no subject
Ah!
[...right, okay, that's. Cool. That's extremely cool, she's pointing her gun at this eye and backing away.]
....you can cross, but be warned - this tree is looking at me.
no subject
That's... alarming.

He vaguely wonders if falling into the stream would drop him straight down to the Underworld, see his father again. It's a stupid line of thought, and thankfully Page's alarm brings him back to his senses.]
...
[Okay, you know what? Sure??? This is fine???]
You don't think that's someone who used to be a person, right?
[We've had people turned into bushes and hedge sculptures and all that before, right??? Surely a tree isn't much different???]
no subject
[more than one person is what Felicia is tempted to say, but. She is going to refrain, that sounds horrific!]
Something really unpleasant. But...we should check it just to be sure.
[...Felicia's just gonna cross the river here, don't mind her, and...well, tentatively wave to the eye??? It seems impolite not to, at any rate. But don't...mind Felicia as she puts some gloves on here, because there is something she's curious about.
...Can she touch the tree, basically, or is it gonna give out the same sort of response as the crystals? And if so, what...the hell does this tree feel like. Is it just tree??? Or is it nightmares.]
no subject
It's also warm.]
no subject
This...this doesn't feel like a tree at all...
[Why is it warm. Why is it doing any of this just what the fuck is this tree made out of, what the actual fuck. This is unholy? She'd almost rather have the moss bodies back.
Alright, okay, let's...okay. Are there like...any pieces of 'bark' that maybe she can try to get off here, she's assuming the science people may want a sample but all the same, she's not...inclined to try it if it might wind up hurting whatever's going on here.
...Ditto for the branches?? Maybe the branches will be less unholy???]

[To say he didn't expect this would be only half-true. To say he didn't want to expect this would be at least 150% true. He's going to shuffle across with the rest of them, his poor clothes... presumably after ending up in the mines for long enough he's already changed into something more practical than his original one.
So it's fine... he's just brushing off excess water and glancing warily at the eyeball.]
Is it okay to touch it?
[Don't poke it in the eye.]
no subject
[Come over here, Jean, don't let her suffer tree touching alone.]
Well, be cautious...
no subject
[If it's got an eye...]
no subject
[Well that's a good of an invite as any. Heinwald trudges his way over, holding his robe and hair above the water to get as little of himself wet as possible.
He readies his staff in case he needs to like...gouge anything. The tree doesn't seem immediately volatile so far, though.
Wow, that sure is an eye. He peers back at it, looking for any signs of it functioning, as well as any other crevices or points of interest on the tree.]
This may be presumptuous of me, but do you have a mouth with which to speak?
[Of course he's going to try to talk to the weird eye tree...]
no subject
More eyes.
Many, many more eyes.]
no subject
[ That's it, that's all he has to say. Wow. ]
no subject
[Well, that's. Alarming.]
How many of you are in there...?

Heinwald's gaze darts as each new crevice opens, looking each and every one of those eyes in...the eye. Are they all of a similar color, or is it more like an amalgamation of eyes? And are they observing their observers?]
